Govt working to protect, empower orphans, street children: Social Welfare Minister

Government vows improved welfare for orphans, disabled children.

Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain has said the government is working to ensure the protection, welfare and overall development of orphans and street children in line with the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

“The government is modernising state-run children's homes to make them more child-friendly. Various initiatives have also been taken to improve the living standards of visually impaired children,” he said.

The minister made the remarks while visiting the Government Children's Home (Boys) in Ward No. 3 of Mymensingh City Corporation.

During the visit, he inspected the institution's overall activities, including accommodation, food quality, education and healthcare services. 

He also exchanged views with orphaned and underprivileged children and inquired about their educational, recreational and sports facilities.

Dr Zahid urged the officials to show greater commitment and compassion in ensuring the wellbeing of the children and directed them to take necessary measures for their welfare.

Later, the minister visited the hostel for visually impaired students at the historic Edward School in the city.

He reviewed the hostel's accommodation facilities, educational environment, healthcare services and other welfare activities, and stressed the need for responsible and dedicated efforts to ensure the best interests of the students.

Among others, Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner Saifur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Department of Social Services Raju Ahmed and local political leaders were present.
