Bangladesh mandates GPS for public transport safety monitoring.
The government has made the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) mandatory for the issuance and renewal of fitness certificates for public transport in an effort to make the country's road transport system safer, more modern, and technology-driven.
The new rule will be applicable for all types of public vehicles from August 1, 2026 while at the same time, it will also be mandatory to keep GPS devices active while operating public transport vehicles, according to a recent gazette notification.
Officials concerned said that the use of GPS technology will make it easier to monitor the location, speed, and routes of public transport vehicles.
This will help control speeding, prevent accidents, track vehicles, and play an effective role in crime prevention.
