Police, RMG workers clash in N’ganj over Tk 30,000 wage demand
Clashes and chases took place between police and garment workers protesting for a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000 in Narayanganj on Wednesday morning. Several workers were detained during the incident.
The clashes occurred in the Shibu Market Katherpul area of Fatullah as workers gathered to block the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road.
According to local residents, police moved to disperse the workers after they assembled in the area. Some protesters responded by throwing bricks and stones at police, prompting officers to fire sound grenades and tear gas shells to disperse them.
Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police Tareq Al Mehedi said workers had attempted to take to the streets instead of remaining at their workplaces.
"We resisted them. We fired sound grenades and tear gas shells so that they could not create an unstable environment," he said.
Several people were detained during the operation, he added.
"We are taking a hardline stance and will not allow them onto the streets under any circumstances," he said.
