Programme boosts future legal professionals

The Attorney General’s Office Bangladesh, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, has launched the second batch of the AGO–UNDP Internship Programme, aiming to strengthen practical legal education and develop future professionals.

The programme was inaugurated at the Supreme Court auditorium following the successful completion of its first cohort in 2025. Designed as a first-of-its-kind initiative, the programme bridges the gap between academic legal studies and real-world public sector practice.

Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman described the initiative as a growing pillar of the justice sector, emphasizing the importance of combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal noted that the programme will continue to expand, offering young legal minds opportunities to engage in constitutional and public interest cases.

UNDP Bangladesh Resident Representative Stefan Liller highlighted the role of youth in justice reform, stating that early exposure to legal practice is essential for building a strong and independent judicial system. He added that participants from the first cohort gained experience in areas such as constitutional law, gender-based violence, and humanitarian issues.

Nicolas Weeks emphasized that a robust justice system is fundamental to democracy and said the initiative will help strengthen rule of law and public trust.

Supported by Sweden, the programme follows a merit-based selection process and includes mentorship, legal research, and field exposure. Officials said it will continue to create pathways for young graduates to contribute meaningfully to Bangladesh’s justice sector.
