Industry renews pledge for worker safety

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) held a memorial prayer service in Dhaka to honour the victims of the Rana Plaza collapse, reaffirming its commitment to worker safety and industry reform.

The Doa Mahfil took place at BGMEA’s Uttara office on Thursday, with President Mahmud Hasan Khan presiding. Special prayers were offered for the departed souls and for the recovery of those injured in the tragedy.

Senior leaders of the association, including First Vice President Selim Rahman and Senior Vice President Inamul Haque Khan, along with vice presidents, directors and general members, attended the event.

Addressing the gathering, Mahmud Hasan Khan described the Rana Plaza disaster as a “wake-up call” that led to sweeping reforms in Bangladesh’s apparel sector. He noted that over the past decade, the industry has undergone significant transformation, emerging as one of the safest and most environmentally compliant garment manufacturing hubs globally.

He emphasised that this progress was achieved through collective efforts by workers, entrepreneurs and both domestic and international stakeholders.

Reaffirming support for those affected, Khan said BGMEA would continue to provide employment opportunities to survivors and their family members in need.

He also stressed the importance of remaining vigilant against any misuse of the tragedy’s legacy.

The programme concluded with remarks from senior leaders, underscoring a shared commitment to maintaining safety standards and sustaining responsible growth in the garment sector.
