India’s Independence Day carries regional significance for BIMSTEC.

DHAKA, Aug 15, 2026: The BIMSTEC Secretariat has extended warm greetings to the people and Government of India on the occasion of the country’s 80th Independence Day.

They shared a message at their official Facebook fan page on Saturday.

In a message marking India’s Independence Day, the Secretariat wished the people and government of India a “Happy and Blessed Independence Day.”

The gesture carries significance for regional diplomacy as India remains one of the founding and key member states of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

BIMSTEC brings together Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand, with regional cooperation focused on areas including trade and investment, connectivity, security, technology, energy and people-to-people contacts.

India’s Independence Day on August 15 is being observed with celebrations across the country and by Indian diplomatic missions and communities abroad.

The BIMSTEC Secretariat’s greetings underscore the importance of India’s role in advancing regional cooperation and strengthening connectivity among the countries of the Bay of Bengal region.

As BIMSTEC continues to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, India’s engagement remains significant to the grouping’s broader efforts to promote shared prosperity, regional stability and closer people-to-people relations.

The message was also shared in connection with India’s Ministry of External Affairs and carried hashtags highlighting India’s Independence Day, BIMSTEC, regional cooperation and the Bay of Bengal.
