Warning against bans, black market rise

The Bangladesh Electronic Nicotine Delivery System Traders Association (BENDSTA) has urged the government to establish and introduce a comprehensive regulatory framework for the distribution of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) also known as e- cigarette.

The leaders called for clear polices governing for this sector including quality control, age restrictions, licensing, taxation and restrict measures to prevent access by minors.

They also emphasized the need to protect this sector from expansion of black markets while fostering an ecofriendly business environment attractive to foreign investors by which foreign investors may get chances to invest in Bangladesh.

BENDSTA leaders demanded the government policy at a press conference was held at a city hotel on Saturday night.

The organization pointed out that developed countries such as United States, United Kingdom, France and Italy have not imposed outright bans on ENDS or e-cigarettes. Instead, these nations regulate the sector under structured legal regulations.

BENDSTA warned that a complete ban in Bangladesh could encourage the proliferation of illicit products and undermine public health safeguards.

BENDSTA president Masud Uz Zaman presided over the conference while General Secretary Rezwan Ahmed and Additional Secretary Tawfique Ahmed were present in the meet.

BENDSTA president Masud Uz Zaman said, there have huge opportunity to attract foreign investors. The sector holds significant potential for foreign direct investment, noting that proposals have already been made by international investors. If the government gives a proper regulatory then Bangladesh may earn huge foreign investment and local revenue.

He added that nearly one million users currently rely on vaping products, while the industry supports over 100 businesses and more than 600 retail outlets nationwide.

The leasers also called for more evidence-based and practical policies for e-cigarettes. The organization raised concerns that misleading information is being shared about these products.

However, the organization expressed concern that some groups are presenting partial and misleading information.
