Digital services expand justice for underserved communities

National Legal Aid Day 2026 was inaugurated in the capital, aiming to broaden access to justice through digital innovation and stronger institutional coordination. The initiative was jointly organised by the Directorate of Bangladesh Legal Aid and UNDP Bangladesh under a European Union-funded project.

The programme focuses on expanding legal services for marginalised people by promoting digital platforms, including the national helpline 16699, and improving outreach nationwide. The observance brought together senior government officials, justice department representatives, development partners and civil society actors.

In his speech, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasised that access to justice is a constitutional right and should not be limited by financial barriers. Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman described legal aid as a practical pathway to ensuring justice for all citizens.

Officials highlighted that financial hardship remains a key obstacle in accessing legal support. Director General Md. Monjurul Hossain said efforts are underway to ensure services reach underserved communities across the country.

The event also featured a legal aid fair, cultural function and youth dialogue to raise awareness and public engagement. Representatives from the European Union reaffirmed continued support for judicial reform and rule of law initiatives in Bangladesh.

The initiatives underscores a growing emphasis on digital transformation in legal services to make justice more inclusive, accessible and efficient nationwide.
