Blind RU graduate appointed following PM’s humanitarian initiative.

Rajshahi University (RU) has appointed Shakil Hossain, a lifelong blind job seeker and former student of the university, following an initiative by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Faridul Islam handed Shakil his appointment letter on Tuesday evening at the BNP chairman's office in Dhaka in the presence of BNP acting General Secretary and Prime Minister's Adviser Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Naogaon-5 MP Zahidul Islam Dholu and Dhaka University Syndicate Member Professor Morshed Hasan Khan, among others, were present.

Shakil Hossain, who was born blind, comes from a poor family in a remote village in Naogaon. Despite his visual impairment, he pursued higher education and obtained a postgraduate degree in Sociology from RU in 2019.

He later passed the written examinations for several government jobs but was not appointed because of restrictions related to his visual impairment, leaving him without employment despite completing his education.

After the matter was brought to the Prime Minister's attention, he asked RU authorities to consider Hossain's case on humanitarian grounds. Following an assessment of his qualifications, the university decided to appoint him.

After handing over the appointment letter, the vice-chancellor said the appointment reflected RU's humanitarian and social responsibility as a higher education institution and wished Shakil Hossain success in his career.
