All Bangladesh-India issues can be resolved thru dialogue: Envoy

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has said that there is no issue between Bangladesh and India that cannot be resolved through discussions between the two countries.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after meeting Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at the Secretariat on Monday.

Describing his meeting with the home minister as a “people’s representative to people’s representative” engagement, Trivedi said it was his first meeting with the minister but did not feel like one.

He described the minister as humble and grounded and said the meeting had been positive.

“There will always be issues between two countries. If there were no issues, there would be no democracy. But I can confidently say that there is no issue that we cannot sit together and settle,” he said.

On Bangladesh-India relations, the envoy said good relations between the two countries would be a win-win situation for both sides.

He said people in both countries wanted to see good relations between Bangladesh and India.

“We do not just share a border, we share dreams,” Trivedi said, stressing that the historical ties and geographical realities connecting the two countries could not be changed.

Asked whether any specific issue had been discussed during his meeting with the home minister, he did not give a direct answer. Instead, he emphasised the need to resolve existing issues through dialogue between the two sides.

The envoy also spoke about the reception he had received from people since arriving in Bangladesh.

“I have received a lot of respect, love and affection in the last two months in Bangladesh,” he said.

Trivedi also expressed hope that a meeting between the prime ministers of Bangladesh and India would produce positive results.

He said the people of both countries wanted to see improved relations between Bangladesh and India and expressed optimism about stronger ties in the coming days.
