Bangladesh opens Cape Town consulate to support diaspora
Bangladesh has inaugurated its honorary consulate in Cape Town, South Africa, to strengthen services for expatriates and deepen bilateral trade and business engagement in the region.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam and Bangladesh High Commissioner to South Africa Shah Ahmed Shafi joined the soft opening ceremony of the honorary consulate on Friday in Cape Town, said a press release here today.
The Western Cape Province hosts the second largest Bangladeshi diaspora community in South Africa, making the consulate a significant step toward expanding consular outreach and support services for Bangladeshi nationals living in the region.
The Bangladesh government nominated prominent businessman Johan Max le Roux as the honorary consul for the Western Cape region in October 2025, considering his longstanding business relations with Bangladesh.
Foreign Secretary Siam visited South Africa to lead the Bangladesh delegation at the 6th Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between Bangladesh and South Africa.
