Government plans consultative National Media Commission framework

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury today said the government does not want to impose a National Media Commission, rather it will be formed based on the views and opinions of all stakeholders.

He reiterated that the government’s commitment to establishing an independent media while delivering the welcome address at a workshop titled “Formulation of the Framework for the National Media Commission” held at a hotel in the capital.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan chaired the programme, while Prime Minister's Information Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman presented the keynote paper.

The state minister said the present government has been working sincerely to establish an independent and free media. Keeping that goal in mind, the government intends to form a National Media Commission, he added.

“An acceptable framework will be prepared based on the advice and opinions of all concerned,” he continued.

Referring to the role of the media, Yasser Khan said the media must point out any mistakes or shortcomings of the government. 

At the same time, he remarked that the government's good initiatives and public welfare activities should also receive equal coverage in the media.

Media personalities, senior journalists and senior officials of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting attended the workshop.
