Titas gas drilling aims to add 15 million cubic feet daily

The country is expected to get an additional 15 million cubic feet of gas per day from a deep exploration well being drilled at the Titas Gas Field in Brahmanbaria.

Officials said the country's first deep exploration well is now under drilling at the field, located in Budhal area of Sadar upazila.

Petrobangla Director A K M Mizanur Rahman inaugurated the drilling work today, expressing optimism that the new well would significantly boost gas supply to the national grid.

According to field data, gas is currently being extracted from depths of up to 3,700 metres at Titas. However, prolonged extraction has led to declining reserves and pressure in the country's oldest gas field.

At present, around 325 million cubic feet of gas is being supplied daily to the national grid from 22 wells operated by Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited.

Officials said a 3D seismic survey has been undertaken to identify new gas reserves. As part of this initiative, two deep exploration wells are being drilled at Titas and Bakhrabad gas fields at a cost of Tk 594 crore.

The new well-Titas's 31st-is expected to reach a depth of 5,600 metres, with drilling likely to take about seven months. The work is being carried out by China National Petroleum Corporation Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company (CCDC).

Project director Md Mahmudul Nawab said preliminary findings from the seismic survey indicate potential reserves of between one and 1.5 trillion cubic feet of gas in the area.

He added that, subject to successful completion of the current drilling, plans are in place to drill seven more wells in the field.

Managing Director of BGFCL, Md Abdul Jalil Pramanik, said new drilling and workover initiatives have been undertaken to enhance production from Titas and other gas fields.

"If the deep exploration wells at Titas and Bakhrabad are successfully completed, it will mark a milestone for the country's energy sector and significantly ease the ongoing energy crisis," he said.

Petrobangla Director Mizanur Rahman said Petrobangla has a plan to drill 50 wells this year to boost domestic energy production.

Senior officials of Petrobangla and BGFCL, including General Manager Engineer Ashraful Alam and Company Secretary Mozahar Ali, were present at the inauguration ceremony.
