Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, MP, said fish farming in the country's open and closed water bodies is an important initiative to meet the protein needs of the people.
As part of the ongoing fish farming initiative across the country, undertaken at the initiative of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, fish fingerlings are being released in stages into the Parliament Bhaban Lake.
He said Bangladesh's coastal and Bay of Bengal areas are very important for fish production and harvesting.
He made the remarks as the chief guest while releasing fish fingerlings into the JS Bhaban Lake today.
At the event, Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat Secretary Barrister Md. Golam Sorwar Bhuiyan delivered the welcome address, with Chief Whip of the National Parliament Nurul Islam Moni, MP, in the chair.
The Speaker said people in rural areas are being encouraged through fish farming in the Parliament Bhaban Lake.
Through this, the people of the country will become interested in producing fishery resources, he added.
Nurul Islam Moni said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been working day and night. The Premier has taken special initiatives to increase the production of fish and meat to meet the protein needs of the people, he added.
He said fish production must be increased in every corner of the country to make the aspirations of "Amader Santan Thakuk Dudhey-Vatey" and "Mache-Vatey Bengalis" a reality.
A total of 1,200 kilograms of fish fingerlings will be released into the Parliament Bhaban Lake.
As part of this initiative, 250 kilograms of fingerlings of rohu, mrigal, catla and kalibaus varieties were released today.
Senior officials concerned from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the National Parliament Secretariat were present at the event.
