Government prioritises solar power, targets 10,000MW renewable energy generation.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit today said the government is placing special emphasis on solar power generation to protect environmental balance by expanding electricity production from renewable energy sources.
"The government has set a target to generate up to 10,000 megawatts of electricity from renewable sources within the next five years," he said while inaugurating a tree plantation programme and the foundation stone laying ceremony of a 10-storey academic building at Jashore Zila School ground.
As part of the Prime Minister's announcement nationwide programme to plant 25 crore trees, the Jashore Education Board inaugurated a campaign to plant 100,000 trees.
"In the past, our power plants were dependent on diesel and furnace oil. Later, they shifted to gas and coal. But these are harming nature. Therefore, the government is now moving towards environment-friendly energy," Amit said.
He said the government, in the current budget, has granted duty and tax exemptions on electric bikes until 2031. At the same time, a policy has been adopted to generate electricity from waste. Initiatives will be taken gradually to make waste from city corporations and municipalities suitable for electricity generation, he added.
Addressing teachers, the state minister said the main objective of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is to make teaching enjoyable through the integration of technology.
He stressed the importance of adopting modern and engaging teaching methods to encourage students to take greater interest in their studies.
Addressing students, the state minister said, "After completing your education, you must use your talent and abilities to help rebuild Bangladesh. None of you should step onto the wrong path, so remain cautious."
Under the government secondary schools development project financed by the Jashore Education Engineering Department, the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education is constructing the 10-storey academic building at Jashore Zila School at a cost of Taka 13.10 crore.
After unveiling the foundation stone, the state minister inspected the construction site.
Later, he inaugurated the tree plantation programme organised by the Jashore Education Board at the school ground and distributed saplings among students.
Jashore Zila Parishad Administrator Delwar Hossain Khokon, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashek Hasan, Jashore Education Board Chairman Professor Faruke Azam Md. Abdus Salam, former Vice-President of Jashore District BNP Golam Reza Dulu, and President of Jashore City BNP Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury Mulluk Chand, among others, were present at the event.
