Boosting affordable diabetes care through innovation

Eskayef Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and Novo Nordisk have announced the launch of local production of modern insulin cartridges in Bangladesh through a technology transfer partnership from Denmark, marking a significant advancement in the country’s healthcare and biopharmaceutical sector.

The initiative will see the production of Penfill® insulin cartridges local for the first time, using internationally aligned manufacturing processes. These insulin products, including NovoMix and NovoRapid, were previously imported but will now be manufactured locally to improve accessibility and reduce costs for patients.

Officials said each batch produced in Bangladesh will undergo quality verification in Denmark to ensure compliance with Novo Nordisk’s global standards. The partnership is expected to enhance supply stability while maintaining strict safety and efficacy requirements.

Health sector stakeholders have welcomed the initiatives as a toward strengthening Bangladesh’s capacity in advanced biopharmaceutical manufacturing and ensuring uninterrupted access to life-saving medicines.

Novo Nordisk Bangladesh also announced an 18% price reduction on key insulin products, aiming to make modern diabetes treatment more affordable. At least 13 million people are currently living with diabetes, a number projected to rise significantly in the coming decades.

The collaboration reflects growing international confidence in Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical capabilities and signals progress toward greater self-reliance in healthcare production and innovation.
