Sherlock Holmes’ fictional final battle took place in Switzerland

A Swiss village has become a global destination for Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts after British author Arthur Conan Doyle chose the dramatic Reichenbach Falls near Meiringen as the setting for the fictional detective’s final confrontation with Professor Moriarty.

The Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh highlighted the literary connection in a recent social media post, drawing attention to the enduring relationship between one of the world’s most famous fictional detectives and the Swiss landscape.

In Doyle’s short story The Final Problem, Sherlock Holmes and his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty meet at the Reichenbach Falls near the village of Meiringen. The story suggests that both characters plunge to their deaths beside the waterfall following their confrontation.

Although Holmes was later brought back into the series, the fictional incident left a lasting mark on Meiringen and turned the Swiss location into a destination of interest for readers and Sherlock Holmes fans from around the world.

Today, Meiringen embraces its connection with the legendary detective. The village features a Sherlock Holmes museum, a statue of Holmes and several landmarks associated with the events described in Doyle’s story.
