Rajshahi College prepares grand 150th anniversary celebration.
Land Minister Md. Mizanur Rahman Minu today said Rajshahi College is not merely an educational institution but also a bearer and promoter of education and culture in the northern region of the country.
"Rajshahi College is like a mother to all of us. Like a mother gathering all her children under one roof, we must bring all its former and current students together to celebrate its 150th anniversary," he said.
The minister made the remarks while addressing a preparatory meeting at his Hare Road residence as the chief guest to mark the 150th anniversary of the college.
He said the anniversary and reunion of the former students would create a bridge between the present and former students. "This celebration will be a festival of unity, heritage and identity," he added.
Referring to the college's 150-year-long glorious history and heritage, the minister said the institution had produced many eminent personalities. He urged the former students living at home and abroad to join the celebrations through registration.
The minister suggested forming country-specific committees comprising alumni where necessary to make the historic reunion memorable.
He further said a commemorative sculpture would be created to preserve the memory of the 150th anniversary for the future generations. Minu noted that the college's glorious history is respected not only in the country but also across the world.
"Therefore, the 150th anniversary celebration will be a grand festival for the generations of the Rajshahi College family," he said.
The minister said initiatives have been taken to implement various infrastructure development projects at Rajshahi College like a modern multi-storey academic building, a state-of-the-art auditorium, new residential facilities for male and female students and development of the institution's historic playground.
The meeting was chaired by Rajshahi College Principal Professor Dr. Md. Ibrahim Ali.
Among others, lawmaker from Rajshahi-3 constituency Advocate Mohammad Shafiqul Haque Milan, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Secretary Md. Saidur Rahman Khan, Rajshahi Development Authority Chairman Md. Abul Kalam Azad and former home secretary SM Zahurul Islam were present as special guests.
Current and former senior officials, members of the Rajshahi College Alumni Association, teachers, former and current students, political leaders, eminent citizens and media representatives also attended the meeting.
