Bangladesh state minister signs condolence book at Nepal Embassy
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Sunday signed the condolence book at the Embassy of Nepal in Dhaka, expressing Bangladesh’s solidarity with the people of Nepal following the devastating flash floods in the country’s north.
The state minister signed the book on September 20 and conveyed her deepest condolences and sympathy to the people affected by the disaster, particularly the families who lost loved ones.
During her visit, Shama Obaed expressed concern over the growing threats posed by climate-induced disasters to developing countries, according to posts published by the Nepal Embassy in Dhaka and Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.
She also held discussions with Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ghanashyam Bhandari on bilateral issues and matters concerning the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
The visit came amid Nepal’s continuing efforts to deal with the aftermath of catastrophic flash floods in its northern region. The disaster has left a large number of people missing and caused extensive damage, with search and recovery operations continuing.
Bangladesh has earlier expressed solidarity with Nepal over the disaster. Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman spoke to his Nepalese counterpart Shisir Khanal in August and conveyed Bangladesh’s readiness to provide support if required.
The Nepal Embassy in Dhaka has also issued appeals for voluntary contributions to support victims of the flash floods.
