Ambassador Saidani recalls Algeria's early recognition of Bangladesh's independence, identifies energy, pharmaceuticals and textiles as key areas of cooperation
Algeria is committed to strengthening its longstanding friendship with Bangladesh through expanded economic, commercial and strategic cooperation, Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdelouahab Saidani has said, highlighting the potential for deeper engagement in energy, pharmaceuticals, textiles, healthcare and shipbuilding.
Recalling Algeria's historic role in Bangladesh's independence, the ambassador said Algeria was the first Arab country to officially recognise Bangladesh in December 1971, describing the gesture as a foundation of the enduring friendship between the two nations.
He made the remarks while presiding over a reception marking the 72nd anniversary of Algeria's Liberation Revolution at a city hotel in Dhaka on Sunday night.
Ambassadors, high commissioners, diplomats, senior government officials, representatives of international organisations and members of the Algerian community attended the event.
Referring to the recent visit of a high-level Bangladeshi ministerial delegation to Algeria, Saidani described it as an important step towards strengthening economic and strategic ties between the two countries.
He identified oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, textiles, leather, healthcare and shipbuilding as promising sectors for expanding bilateral trade, investment and industrial cooperation.
The ambassador also highlighted Algeria's ongoing economic transformation under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, with a focus on economic diversification, boosting non-hydrocarbon exports, infrastructure development, mining, agriculture and attracting foreign investment.
Paying tribute to the heroes and martyrs of Algeria's liberation struggle, Saidani recalled the historic revolution launched on November 1, 1954, against 132 years of French colonial rule.
He said the Algerian Revolution had inspired national liberation movements across Africa, Asia and Latin America and remained a defining chapter in the country's history.
Referring to this year's commemorative theme, "November 1: Country's Memory and Ummah's Future", the ambassador reiterated Algeria's commitment to sovereignty, self-determination, dialogue and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
He also reaffirmed Algeria's support for the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian and Western Saharan peoples.
Bangladesh and Algeria have expressed optimism that growing diplomatic engagement and recent agreements, particularly in the energy sector, would help translate their longstanding friendship into practical cooperation in trade, investment and industrial development.
The reception concluded with renewed expressions of solidarity and friendship between the two countries.
