Bangladesh plans to modernise its postal network with digital post offices, e-commerce logistics hubs and digital financial services as it marks World Post Day 2026.

Bangladesh needs to transform its postal services into a modern, technology-driven network to capitalise on the growth of e-commerce and digital financial services, officials and experts said on Friday.

They made the remarks at a discussion meeting organised by the Directorate of Posts at the Postal Building in Agargaon, Dhaka, marking World Post Day 2026 under the theme “Integrated Postal Network, Boundless Possibilities”.

Bilkis Jahan Rimi, secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division, attended the event as the chief guest. Kazi Asadul Islam, director general of the Directorate of Posts, presided over the meeting, while former director general Md Siraj Uddin presented the keynote paper.

The speakers stressed the need to strengthen the postal network to support e-commerce logistics, parcel delivery, digital financial services and the provision of accessible services to marginalised communities.

They said an integrated postal system could help the country respond to changing consumer demands while expanding access to essential services, particularly for people underserved by conventional service providers.

Six priorities were identified for modernising the postal department: digital post offices, an integrated postal database, e-commerce logistics hubs, expanded digital financial services, data-driven management and a green postal system.

The speakers also underscored the importance of developing the skills of postal employees, strengthening data security and adopting environmentally friendly technologies to improve operational efficiency and service quality.

Postal Service Week observed nationwide

To mark World Post Day, Bangladesh is observing Postal Service Week from October 9 to 15, with activities planned across the country.

The programme includes letter festivals at different universities, philatelic exhibitions and postal service fairs. Postal services are also being made available to the public at all levels of postal offices on October 9 and 10, excluding savings bank operations.

The speakers expressed optimism that a modern, integrated postal network would play a greater role in supporting Bangladesh's digital economy, expanding e-commerce, promoting financial inclusion and contributing to national development.

The proposed modernisation comes as postal services worldwide face growing pressure to adapt to digital communication, changing delivery requirements and the expanding logistics needs of online businesses.
