BNP repeatedly restored Bangladesh’s development path, says state minister.

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam today said Bangladesh has repeatedly regained its direction with the support and leadership of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

“After 1975, when the country fell into a crisis, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the proclaimer of the country’s Independence, took charge with the support of the people and members of the armed forces . . . and the country began to move forward,” he said.

The state minister was speaking at a views-exchange meeting with local journalists at the Circuit House here this noon.

He said Bangladesh witnessed economic development during that period, particularly in the agricultural sector.

“When the country lost its way again in the 1990s, it regained the path of development under the leadership of the Zia family,” said Shahe Alam.

He alleged that various development initiatives had repeatedly been undermined through conspiracies against the BNP.

“BNP came to power through the people’s votes only seven months ago. The incumbent government is trying to work to the best of its ability. We cannot promise to provide heaven, but we can guarantee development,” he said.

Regarding the upcoming local government elections, the state minister said the BNP would not tarnish its reputation in the polls. Rather, he said, the party would extend all-out cooperation to the administration to ensure free, fair and transparent elections.

Referring to the past two decades, he alleged that “looting was carried out in the name of mega projects.”

He said development activities would be undertaken across Gaibandha and elsewhere in the country to make the areas more livable for the people.

“If Bogura develops, Gaibandha will benefit more than other districts,” Shahe Alam said.

Among others, BNP National Executive Committee Joint Organising Secretary for Rangpur Division Professor Aminul Islam, Gaibandha Zilla Parishad Administrator and District BNP President Dr Moinul Hasan Sadik, Vice-President Professor Dr Ziaul Hasan Zia and General Secretary Mahmudunnabi Titu attended the meeting.

Later, the state minister attended a party meeting with BNP leaders and activists before joining the district law-and-order and coordination meetings.

Earlier, around 11:30am, BNP leaders and activists and local administration officials welcomed him with flowers at the Circuit House.

The administration also accorded him a guard of honour.
