Bangladesh, Switzerland Partner to Strengthen Legal Aid for Migrant Workers
DHAKA, October 27, 2026: Bangladesh has taken a step towards improving access to justice for migrant workers and their families through a new partnership aimed at connecting them with legal assistance when they face abuse, fraud or unpaid wages.
Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Reto Renggli joined Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman, MP, at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Directorate of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Helvetas Bangladesh under the Swiss-supported SIMS project.
The partnership aims to strengthen access to legal support for migrant workers and their families, particularly those who encounter exploitation, recruitment-related fraud and wage disputes.
Under the initiative, migrant workers and their families are expected to receive better connections to appropriate legal assistance when they face difficulties, helping them seek remedies and protect their rights.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Renggli underscored the importance of ensuring that legal protections reach those who need them most.
The agreement reflects a shared commitment to improving access to justice for migrant workers, whose contributions are vital to Bangladesh's economy but who can face legal and financial vulnerabilities during the migration process.
The partnership also highlights the importance of cooperation between government institutions and development partners in making legal support more accessible to migrant workers and their families.
Bangladesh relies heavily on overseas employment for remittance earnings, making the protection of migrant workers' rights and welfare an important policy priority.
The initiative is expected to contribute to stronger support mechanisms for migrant workers seeking assistance in cases of abuse, fraud and unpaid wages.
