China Congratulates Mirza Fakhrul, Eyes Deeper Bangladesh Ties

BEIJING, August 22, 2026: China has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations with Dhaka.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks at the ministry’s regular press conference on August 21 in response to a question from Shenzhen TV regarding the Bangladeshi presidential election and China’s expectations for bilateral relations in the coming years.

“China congratulates Mr. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the president of Bangladesh,” Lin said.

He said China attaches importance to its relations with Bangladesh and is ready to work with the Bangladeshi government to implement the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries.

According to the spokesperson, Beijing also seeks to advance high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative while expanding exchanges and cooperation across various sectors.

Lin said China will work with Bangladesh to make new progress in building a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future in the new era.

The remarks signal Beijing’s intention to maintain the momentum of bilateral engagement under Bangladesh’s new political leadership, with economic cooperation, connectivity, development partnerships and broader exchanges expected to remain key areas of the relationship.

China and Bangladesh have maintained close diplomatic relations and have expanded cooperation in trade, infrastructure, investment, connectivity and other areas in recent years. Beijing has consistently described Bangladesh as an important partner in its regional cooperation framework.
