Bangladesh awaits Saudi court verdict on executed nationals.

Bangladesh today said it sought the verdict of Saudi Arabian court that sentenced two Bangladeshis to death, after seeking information over their executions, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said here today.

“Once we receive a copy of the verdict, we will be able to brief you more clearly and assess the matter,” she told journalists at the foreign ministry this afternoon.

Shama, however, urged all to keep patience over executed two – a male and a female – and stay away from drawing conclusions from Facebook posts or spread of misinformation and disinformation on social media.

The junior minister said that Dhaka would assess the matter after receiving the documents and decide its next steps through discussions with Saudi authorities.

Shama said the government had already sought information from Saudi Arabia and was awaiting a response.

The state minister, however, said Saudi authorities periodically send lists of Bangladeshis imprisoned in the kingdom containing identities and details of detainees to the foreign ministry and Bangladesh missions there.

“We are checking whether the names of these two individuals are on those lists,” the state minister said.

Shama said the government also had a responsibility to ensure that Bangladeshis employed in Saudi Arabia could work safely and “we always keep that in mind”.

Please be patient and let us receive the verdict. We will then be able to speak more clearly,” she said.

But asked whether the government had contacted the families of those concerned, Shama said the ministry was yet to have detailed information and did not receive information from the families.

Describing Saudi Arabia’s response as “very positive”, the state minister stressed the importance of the kingdom as a destination for Bangladeshi workers and a source of remittances.
