DCs directed to probe artificial LPG shortages, price hikes
Mentioning that there is no shortage of LPG supply in the country, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood directed deputy commissioners (DCs) to investigate whether an artificial shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been created to drive up prices.
“There is no shortage of LPG supply in the country. However, artificial shortages may be being created in some areas to charge higher prices,” the minister made the directive while addressing an online meeting with deputy commissioners from the Bangladesh Secretariat today.
The minister also directed district administrations to submit reports—complete with supporting evidence—explaining why LPG shortages are being reported despite normal supplies, and why consumers are being charged above the official rates.
He added that once the deputy commissioners submit their reports, the government will hold a meeting with importers and other relevant stakeholders to take necessary action, adding, “Steps will be taken to increase supplies in areas where shortages are found.”
The minister warned that strict action would be taken against anyone responsible for creating artificial shortages or charging prices above those fixed by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
He also instructed the district administrations to remain more vigilant and alert to ensure normal LPG supplies across the country.
