Speaker Hafiz Uddin assumes President's duties after resignation
According to the Article 54 of the Constitution, Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram will discharge the duties of the President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh until a new President is elected.
The provision came effective following the resignation of President Mohammed Sahabuddin from office on July 24.
The Cabinet Division today issued a gazette notification in this regard.
The gazette, signed by Cabinet Secretary Dr Nasimul Gani stated that the order would be implemented immediately in accordance with the Constitution.
The Cabinet Division's website has also published the gazette confirming acceptance of the resignation letter of outgoing President Mohammed Sahabuddin and stating that Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram will discharge the responsibilities of the President as the new head of state.
