State minister says Sheikh Hasina must face legal trial.
State Minister for Land and Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin today said Sheikh Hasina will have to return to Bangladesh one day and face trial under the country's existing law.
He said there is no real basis for the claim that she will return to politics after returning to the country.
Mir Helal made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion, art exhibition and cultural program titled 'Bloody Red July and New Bangladesh' organized by the District Bar Association at the Chattogram District Bar Association auditorium.
He stated that as long as even a single leader or activist remains in those political parties-one who took to the streets against autocracy without concealing their identity, endured lawsuits and attacks, and played an active role in the movement to restore democracy-Sheikh Hasina's nightmare will never materialize.
He said that 'BNP does not want to implement state reforms' - such statements are not correct. BNP had announced a 31-point state reform program in July, 2023. Later, it was updated by aligning it with the national reform programme.
He said that 114 ordinances were passed in the first session of the National Parliament in less than a month after the formation of the government. Necessary amendments will be made to the Constitution as per the needs of the country based on everyone's opinions.
Praising the role of Chattogram lawyers in the July Mass Uprising, Barrister Mir Helal said lawyers participated relentlessly in the movement both on the streets and in the courts. The nation will remember their contribution with respect.
The event was presided over by Chattogram District Bar Association President Advocate Tarique Ahmad while Abu Sufian, MP, addressed the function as special guest.
The welcome address was delivered by the association's general secretary Advocate Mohammad Moinuddin and moderated by joint general secretary Mohammad Nazrul Islam. Chattogram District Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Ashraf Hossain Chowdhury Razzak, former president of the District Bar Association Advocate Abdur Sattar, former general secretary Advocate Hasan Ali Chowdhury and other lawyer leaders also spoke at the event.
