ICT accepts charges over 2013 Shapla Chattar crackdown case
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 today took into cognizance the formal charge against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 40 others in a crimes against humanity case over the May 5, 2013 crackdown on a Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh rally at the capital's ‘Shapla Chattar’.
A total of 58 people were allegedly killed during the crackdown carried out by the members of law enforcement agencies in and around the ‘Shapla Chattar’ and different parts of the country.
The three-member second tribunal headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury passed the order, asking to produce the accused, who are already behind bars, before it on August 16. It also issued arrest warrant against the fugitive accused.
The prosecution earlier in the morning filed the formal charge to the office of the ICT Registrar, accusing 41 people, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The other accused in the case are: Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku, Hasanul Haq Inu, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Dr Abdur Razzaque, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Dr Hasan Mahmud, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Abdul Latif Siddique, Mrinal Kanti Das, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Dr Dipu Moni, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Omar Faruk Chowdhury, Salahuddin Mahmud, Dr Imran H Sarker, Shahriar Kabir, Mozammel Haque Babu, Farzana Rupa, Hasan Mahmud Khandker, AKM Shahidul Hoque, Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary, Benazir Ahmed, Mohammad Mokhlesur Rahman, General (Retd) Aziz Ahmed, Major General (Retd) Ziaul Ahsan, Mohammad Mujibur Rahman, Abdul Jalil Mondal, Sheikh Muhammad Maruf Hasan, Mahbub Hossain, Monirul Islam, Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Ashraful Zaman, SM Mehedi Hasan, Harun-or-Rashid, Biplob Kumar Sarker, Syed Nurul Islam, Mohammad Asaduzzaman, SM Shibli Noman and BM Forman Ali.
The ICT probe body filed the draft investigation report in the case recently.
Confirming the development to reporters, ICT Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam on July 19 had said the report will now undergo a final review and verification to ensure a transparent trial based on a sound investigation report.
Md Aminul Islam also added that they had received a list of 61 victims of the government crackdown carried out in connection with the Hefazat-e-Islam rally across the country, and the tribunal's investigation agency has so far identified 58 of them.
