Fugitive Zia assassination convict to face military trial.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the trial of Major Mozaffar Hossain (retd), a fugitive in the assassination case of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, will be conducted under the existing military law.
“The main trial of Ziaur Rahman's assassination was held under military court, where specific findings about the murder have been established,” he told reporters after a meeting with senior Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials at the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana today.
The minister said that police arrested Mozaffar based on intelligence information after years of living under a false identity in a neighboring country. He is now military custody for legal proceedings.
"The case will be tried through a General Court Martial in accordance with the law," the minister said, adding that there is no legal provision to try the same offence separately under both civil and military laws.
Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized that the legal process would proceed under the military justice system.
