Water committee reviews 93 projects, urges timely completion.
The first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Water Resources of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad was held today at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Committee Chairman Mohammad Shafiqul Haque Milon, MP, presided over the meeting. At the outset, an introductory session was held among the committee members.
The meeting then reviewed the activities of the Ministry of Water Resources over the past six months and appreciated the ministry’s progress in various areas, said a press release of parliament secretariat.
The meeting discussed a number of initiatives, including advance preparations to prevent river erosion and tree plantation programmes.
It was informed that the Padma Barrage Project had already been approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).
The meeting was also informed that strong assurances had been received regarding the renewal of the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, commonly known as the Farakka Treaty.
It was further informed that the main work on the Teesta Master Plan is expected to begin next year.
The overall activities of the Ministry of Water Resources were presented before the committee through a detailed presentation. Information on ongoing development activities, project progress, implementation periods and budget allocations was also placed before the meeting.
The meeting was informed that 93 development projects are currently being implemented under the Ministry of Water Resources.
A total of Tk 7,832.80 crore has been allocated for these projects in the fiscal year 2026-27.
Detailed lists containing project durations, allocations and implementation-related information were also presented.
The committee urged the authorities to complete the development projects within the stipulated timeframe, ensure proper and efficient utilisation of allocated funds, and take more effective measures to improve the quality of public services.
Members of the committee, including Minister for Water Resources Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, MP; State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, MP; A.K.M. Fazlul Haque Milon, MP; A.E. Sultan Mahmud Babu, MP; Alamgir Muhammad Mahfuz Ullah Farid, MP; Munsi Rafiqul Alam, MP; Md Izzat Ullah, MP; Md Mashiur Rahman Khan, MP; and Md Oli Ullah, MP, attended the meeting.
Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, director generals of various agencies under the ministry, senior officials, heads of the agencies concerned and officials of the Parliament Secretariat were also present.
