Tarique congratulates Tigers on historic Test victory in Australia.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today congratulated the Bangladesh national cricket team for securing a historic Test victory against the mighty Australia—one of the Big Three in Test cricket—in their own backyard.
"Soon after the Tigers clinched the historic victory in the first cricket Test against Aussies, honorable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called BCB Director Fahim Sinha over phone and extended his greetings to BCB President Tamim Iqbal, the players, coaching staff and all concerned of the national cricket team," Prime Minister's Press Secretary AAM Saleh Shibly told BSS.
He said the prime minister made the phone call from the bus as he was on the way to Kishoreganj to attend a number of programmes, including the formal inauguration of the National Fisheries Week 2026.
After the match ended, he spoke to the Bangladesh players over a video call and congratulated them on their historic achievement.
The prime minister also conveyed greetings to the players on behalf of the people of Bangladesh.
He said the historic victory against a strong Australian side on their home ground was a matter of immense pride for Bangladesh cricket.
“The remarkable success was achieved through the players’ strong determination, confidence, skill and collective effort,” the prime minister said.
He said the entire nation is happy over the test victory against Australia and they are ready to accord a warm reception to the cricketers once they return home from Australia.
He expressed hope that the Bangladesh cricket team would continue to progress on the world stage by maintaining team spirit, discipline, and self-confidence, thereby inspiring the younger generation toward sports.
Bangladesh today created history by sealing a nine-wicket victory against Australia in the first cricket Test at Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin.
Offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed a five-wicket haul on Day 4 to bowl out Australia for 284 in the second innings, leaving Bangladesh a target of 57 runs, which it chased down to secure its first Test victory on Australian soil.
Bangladesh reached the winning target in 14.2 overs for the loss of Tanzid Hasan Tamim, bringing a watershed moment in the country's cricket history. The victory came 23 years after Bangladesh last played a Test in Australia.
