Separate teacher pay scale, major recruitment plans announced.
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon today said that a separate pay scale would also be announced for teachers.
“Today’s students are the Bangladesh of tomorrow. Therefore, we have to turn them into skilled human resources,” he said.
The minister was addressing the inaugural ceremony of ‘University Day-2026’, marking the 23rd anniversary of the transformation of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) into a university.
He said the then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia transformed four educational institutions into universities in 2003, one of which is today’s KUET.
“We have to come forward to serve the country by utilising the knowledge and skills acquired from this educational institution,” he said.
Dr Milon also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed interest in encouraging 116,000 students who have achieved GPA-5 by awarding them prizes.
“Work is also underway to provide pink bicycles to girls to facilitate their higher education,” he added.
The minister said teacher recruitment had been delayed, but 77,000 teachers would be recruited soon.
“Through this recruitment, the Prime Minister is giving the highest priority to education. The contribution of education to GDP will be raised from 2 percent to 5 percent,” he said.
KUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Masud presided over the programme.
National Parliament Whip Rakibul Islam Bakul, MP, speaking as a special guest, said KUET is a politics-free campus.
“No politics, either openly or secretly, will be allowed on this campus,” he said.
He also requested the education minister to arrange a modern medical centre and five to 10 electric buses for the university.
Professor Dr Muhammad Shahjahan Ali, chairman of the University Day-2026 celebration committee, and Professor Dr Hasan Ali, Director of Students Affairs, also addressed the inaugural programme.
The day’s programme began this morning with a friendly gathering in front of the university auditorium.
This was followed by hoisting of the national flag and inauguration of University Day with the national anthem, a joyous rally, visits to stalls, a presentation titled ‘KUET’s Achievements (Heritage and Future)’, a discussion and tree plantation.
In the afternoon, poster and project presentations were held on the ground floor of the Student Welfare Centre, while laboratories of different departments were opened to visitors.
A friendly football match between teachers and students was held at 4pm, followed by a doa mahfil at the university central mosque, seeking blessings for the welfare of the country and its people.
A cultural programme was held at the university auditorium in the evening.
