Government announces incentives for rooftop solar and battery storage.
The today announced a special incentive package as part of a campaign for installation of rooftop solar panels and battery storage to promote renewable energy in the country.
“The government fixed the maximum generation cost of electricity from rooftop solar systems with batteries at Tk 8.0 per unit considering various tenders and current market price,” an energy ministry announcement said.
It said as part of the special incentive, a 20 percent profit and an 11.25 percent premium were added to the generation cost, fixing the price of electricity at Tk 10.50 per unit.
The notification came into effect from September 1, 2026 today.
“If a customer is able to install such a solar power system at a lower cost than the prescribed amount, the amount saved will be considered as the customer's dividend,” the notification said.
It said under the Net Metering Guideline 2025, customers who would install rooftop solar systems by February 28, 2027, and supply surplus electricity to the national grid will receive Tk 10.50 per unit until February 28, 2030.
The electricity distribution companies will maintain customer information, determine the amount of electricity supplied to the national grid, and preserve relevant data on electricity prices, including the incentive amount.
The incentive payments will be transferred to customers' bank or mobile financial service accounts while no payment will be in cash under any circumstances.
According tom the notification the offer would expire after February 28, 2027.
Solar panels, batteries, inverters, metres and other equipment used in the systems must comply with the technical standards set by Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA), the notification said.
It said policy support related to the installation of solar power systems would be provided through the One-Stop Service Centre of the Power Division, while identical support would also be available at district- and upazila-level offices under the electricity distribution companies.
