CID arrests suspect in Tk40 lakh Italy visa fraud case
Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a 47-year-old man in connection with an alleged human trafficking and visa fraud case involving Tk 40 lakh taken from two young men on the promise of sending them to Italy for employment.
The arrestee, identified as Md Kamal Hossain, was apprehended at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 7:00 pm on Sunday, said a CID press release today.
According to the case statement, the victims were lured by members of an alleged human trafficking network with promises of jobs and a better life in Italy. The accused reportedly agreed to send each of the two men to Italy for Tk 30 lakh.
In line with the agreement, the victims paid Tk 2o lakh each at different times, amounting to Tk 4o lakh in total.
On May 26, 2026, the two men were provided with airline tickets and Italian visas to travel to Italy on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight.
However, upon arriving at Rome's Fiumicino Airport, Italian immigration officials examined their passports, visas and tickets and found that the Schengen visas attached to their passports were allegedly forged.
Although their passports were found to be genuine, the two men were detained by Italian immigration authorities and subsequently deported to Bangladesh on May 28, 2026.
After returning home, the victims reported the incident to the relevant authorities.
A case was subsequently filed with Airport Police Station on May 30, 2026, under sections 6, 7, 16 and 19 of the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Prevention Ordinance, along with sections 406, 420, 467, 468 and 109 of the Penal Code.
The CID identified Kamal Hossain as a suspect based on evidence gathered during the investigation and intelligence information before conducting an operation to arrest him.
The press release stated that during preliminary questioning, Kamal allegedly admitted to involvement in human trafficking.
He has been produced before the court.
The investigation is ongoing, with investigators working to identify other individuals involved in the case and the alleged trafficking network, trace the flow and distribution of the money, and verify other evidence related to the incident.
The CID said legal action would be taken against those found involved based on the evidence gathered during the investigation.
