Swiss envoy stresses importance of press freedom to democracy

DHAKA, Oct 2, 2026 — Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Reto Renggli has emphasised the importance of a free and independent press as a key measure of democracy.

“A free and independent press is an important yardstick of democracy,” Renggli said while welcoming Bangladeshi journalists covering diplomatic affairs to the Swiss Residence.

The Swiss Embassy hosted its annual reception for diplomatic affairs correspondents, bringing together journalists from different media organisations, including familiar faces and newcomers.

The reception provided an opportunity for the ambassador and journalists to exchange views and discuss their professional experiences, according to the Swiss Embassy.

“Thank you to everyone who joined us,” the embassy said in a statement.

The Swiss mission reiterated Switzerland’s support for media freedom globally, including in Bangladesh.

The event also underscored the importance of regular engagement between diplomatic missions and journalists covering foreign affairs and international relations.
