Century-old tradition thrives with modern backing

The 117th edition of the iconic Jabbar-er Boli Khela concluded at Laldighi Maidan, with Bagha Sharif of Cumilla reclaiming the championship in a fiercely contested finale.

Sharif defeated fellow contender Rashed Boli in the final bout, emerging victorious among 108 from across the country. The champion received Tk 30,000, while the runner-up was awarded Tk 20,000. The historic wrestling event once again drew thousands of spectators, reaffirming its enduring popularity in Bangladesh’s cultural calendar.

Telecommunications operator Banglalink continued its long-standing association as title sponsor for the 12th consecutive year, underscoring its commitment to preserving traditional heritage. This year, the event also reached a broader audience through nationwide livestreaming on the Toffee platform.

The function was inaugurated by Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali, with City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain attending as chief guest. He described the event as a living symbol of identity and history, reflecting over a century of cultural continuity.

Introduced in 1909 by merchant Abdul Jabbar Sawdagor, the competition has evolved into a major public festival held during the Bengali New Year period. Organised by the Boli Foundation, the event continues to unite communities while bridging tradition with modern engagement.

With strong participation and corporate backing, Jabbar’s Boli Khela remains a powerful emblem of resilience, heritage and national pride.
