Bringing network access to remote areas
Banglalink has partnered with Starlink Mobile to introduce Bangladesh’s first satellite-to-mobile service, aiming to extend connectivity to remote and underserved regions.
The collaboration marks a significant step in enhancing digital inclusion by integrating satellite technology with Banglalink’s existing network. The service is designed to eliminate coverage gaps, allowing users to stay connected even in areas where traditional telecom infrastructure is limited.
Initially, the service will support SMS and over-the-top (OTT) messaging, with voice and data capabilities expected to be added in later phases. Users will be able to access connectivity as long as they have a clear view of the sky, providing a reliable communication lifeline in off-grid locations.
Bangladesh’s challenging geography, including hill tracts, coastal islands and riverine areas, often restricts network expansion. The satellite-enabled service is expected to improve communication in these regions, particularly during emergencies and natural disasters.
Banglalink Chief Executive Officer Johan Buse said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to ensuring connectivity reaches all communities. He emphasised that the partnership aims to bridge existing gaps and support uninterrupted communication nationwide.
Stephanie Bednarek of Starlink Mobile noted that Bangladesh will be the third market under VEON to adopt this technology, following deployments in Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
The launch is currently awaiting regulatory approval and is expected to roll out soon, signalling a new era in Bangladesh’s telecommunications landscape.
