Canal re-excavation aims to boost agriculture, economy, and employment.

Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee today said the government's canal excavation and re-excavation programme would bring positive changes to the rural economy by improving irrigation, reducing waterlogging and creating employment opportunities.

The minister made the remarks while inspecting the Patali-Machuakhali Canal at PM Khali in Cox's Bazar.

He said the canal's water would be used for agricultural irrigation, while improved drainage facilities would help mitigate waterlogging.

The programme would also enhance fish production and encourage tree plantation along canal banks, contributing to environmental protection.

The minister said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate the re-excavation of the Patali-Machuakhali Canal tomorrow.

"Re-excavation of the canal will facilitate irrigation for agricultural activities and protect people living on both sides of the canal from flood-induced waterlogging," he said.

Anne said local people have been engaged in the excavation programme, creating employment opportunities at the grassroots level.

Referring to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, he said canal excavation had played an important role in agricultural development and expressed hope that the ongoing programme would further strengthen the country's agricultural sector.

The minister said canal excavation and re-excavation works are being carried out in 54 districts in the first phase of a nationwide programme.

He added that the government has set a target to excavate and re-excavate 20,000 kilometres of canals, rivers, water bodies and ponds across the country over the next five years.

Local lawmaker Lutfor Rahman Kajal, officials of district and upazila administrations and leaders of BNP and its associate bodies were present.
