Russian House to celebrate Tagore’s journey to Russia through poetry, music

DHAKA, October 28: The Russian House in Dhaka, in collaboration with Songskriti, will organise a cultural programme on Saturday to commemorate Rabindranath Tagore’s historic visit to the Soviet Union in 1930, highlighting the literary and cultural connections between Bangladesh and Russia.

Titled The World-Filling Light: Tagore’s Journey to Russia — Letters, Songs and Reflections, the programme will begin at 6:00pm on October 31 at the Russian House in Dhaka.

Marking the 96th anniversary of the Nobel laureate’s visit, the event will explore his impressions of Soviet society through poetry, literature, music and film.

The evening will feature recitations of Bengali and Russian poetry, readings from Letters from Russia, a documentary screening and a book review of The Soviet Union in Its Early Days: In the Eyes of the Poet Rabindranath Tagore. Artists from Songskriti will also perform musical pieces as part of the programme.

Tagore’s 1930 visit to the Soviet Union offered him an opportunity to observe the country's social transformation, particularly its approach to education, cultural development and the lives of ordinary people. His observations were later reflected in his writings, including Letters from Russia, in which he shared his impressions of Soviet society.

The programme aims to revisit Tagore’s reflections and explore their continuing relevance while celebrating the enduring cultural relationship between Bangladesh and Russia.

Through poetry, music and literary discussion, the event will bring together different artistic expressions to revisit the poet’s engagement with Russia and his broader thoughts on society, education and human development.
