Police register case over alleged assault, religious coercion; security deployed near victims’ homes

Three Christian families in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district were allegedly assaulted, threatened and forced to participate in Hindu religious rituals between October 18 and 20, raising concerns over religious freedom and the protection of minority communities in India.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the families were allegedly pressured to abandon Christianity and take part in Hindu religious practices. The reported incidents have prompted police action, with an investigation underway.

A woman from one of the affected families alleged that the attackers tore her clothes and subjected her to a public purification ritual. She also accused them of pressuring her family to renounce Christianity.

The families were further allegedly forced to offer prayers at a Durga Puja pandal, according to the report.

Police have registered a case involving charges including attempted murder, criminal intimidation and outraging a woman’s modesty. Security personnel have also been deployed near the victims’ homes amid concerns about their safety.

The investigation is continuing, and the allegations have yet to be established through the judicial process.

Religious freedom and minority protection

The reported incidents have renewed attention to the importance of protecting religious freedom and ensuring that individuals can practise their faith without intimidation or coercion.

India’s Constitution guarantees freedom of conscience and the right to freely profess, practise and propagate religion, subject to constitutional limitations. The protection of these rights, alongside effective law enforcement, remains important for maintaining communal harmony in the country.

Any attempt to force individuals to change their religious practices through threats or violence raises serious concerns about personal liberty, dignity and the peaceful coexistence of different faith communities.

The ongoing police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged incidents and determine responsibility in accordance with the law.
