Labour leader Mosaddek Hossain Swapan dies

Noted labour leader and freedom fighter Mosaddek Hossain Swapan died while undergoing treatment at BIRDEM Hospital on Wednesday, the Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh said in a statement.

Swapan was president of the Workers-Peasants-Socialist Party and the Bangladesh United Workers Federation.

Akbar Khan, acting general secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh, expressed deep sorrow over Swapan’s death in a statement issued to the media on Thursday.

He described Swapan as a worker-friendly and dedicated leader, saying his longstanding struggle for workers’ rights, fair wages and dignity would remain memorable in the country’s labour movement.

Khan said Swapan’s contributions to securing workers’ rights and opposing exploitation and deprivation would be remembered with respect by workers and fellow activists.

On behalf of the party, Khan expressed condolences to Swapan’s family, colleagues, fellow comrades and well-wishers and paid tribute to his memory.

Swapan’s death marks the loss of a veteran figure in Bangladesh’s labour movement, the statement said.
