Russian House in Dhaka marked Russian artist Mikhail Vrubel’s 170th birth anniversary with an educational programme for young Bangladeshi artists.

The Russian House in Dhaka celebrated the 170th birth anniversary of renowned Russian artist Mikhail Vrubel with an educational programme aimed at introducing young Bangladeshi artists to his life, techniques and artistic legacy.

Held on October 9, the programme brought together students studying art at the Serov Academy of Fine Arts from various educational institutions across Dhaka.

The event featured an audiovisual presentation tracing Vrubel’s artistic development, from his academic training to his celebrated Symbolist works, including The Demon Seated, Pan and The Swan Princess.

Participants explored Vrubel’s distinctive artistic style, marked by crystalline, mosaic-like forms and faceted planes of colour. The presentation highlighted how his innovative use of colour, texture and geometric shapes helped establish a distinctive visual language and anticipated aspects of modern art.

The programme also introduced students to other dimensions of Russian artistic heritage, including decorative ceramics and stage design, offering a broader perspective on the country's contribution to visual arts.

The organisers said the initiative was designed to deepen young artists’ understanding of Russian art history and encourage international appreciation of its cultural and artistic traditions.

The programme reflects the Russian House in Dhaka’s continued efforts to promote Russian culture and strengthen cultural ties between Bangladesh and Russia through educational and artistic exchanges.

Mikhail Vrubel (1856–1910) was a prominent Russian artist associated with Symbolism and known for his distinctive visual style, expressive compositions and innovative treatment of form and colour. His works remain an important part of Russia’s artistic heritage.
