Zonta Club of Sonargaon Launches Sustainable Initiative for Mother and Child Welfare

DHAKA, AUGUST 22, 2026: Zonta Club of Sonargaon, in collaboration with the Begum Rokeya Women and Child Development Organization, has launched a special initiative aimed at improving the quality of life for underprivileged women and children. A ceremony marking the occasion was held today, Saturday (August 22), at the Begum Rokeya Organization’s center in Uttara.

As part of this initiative, the organization announced the adoption of two children, the donation of a wheelchair to a child with special needs, and the rollout of training programs for women. Additionally, an interactive counseling session was conducted for underprivileged women and children, emphasizing awareness against child marriage.

Lajina Mona, President of Zonta Club of Sonargaon, said, "Zonta International is a century-old service organization based in the USA, actively working across Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, we operate through seven clubs—six in Dhaka and one in Chattogram- supported by a dedicated youth volunteer team. Today, we came together to adopt a mother and child, while promoting the importance of hygiene and raising awareness about the harms of child marriage. Moving forward, we aim to provide accessible medical support and expand our projects beyond Dhaka."

Highlighting the role of youth leadership, Ayaan Manzur Rahman, Youth President of Zonta Club of Sonargaon, added, "I joined volunteer work back in the eighth grade. I strongly encourage young people to engage in community service because Gen Z represents the future of our nation. It is inspiring to see young volunteers participating with such genuine enthusiasm."

The outreach program was conducted with the support of the Begum Rokeya Women and Child Development Organization. Operating since 1997, the organization provides healthcare services for mothers and children, speech therapy for children with special needs, food and care for the elderly, maternal healthcare, child vaccinations, educational scholarships, and affordable medicines.
