Bangladesh and Algeria sign a landmark MoU on hydrocarbons as Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood leads a delegation to Algiers to expand oil and gas cooperation.
Bangladesh and Algeria have signed a landmark memorandum of understanding (MoU) on hydrocarbons, marking a new milestone in bilateral relations and opening avenues for deeper cooperation in the oil and gas sector.
The agreement was highlighted during a visit to Algiera.
Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Bangladeshi ministerial delegation led by Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood took part a meeting during the MoU ceremony was held at letters office in Algeria.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir was also present at the meeting.
The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka announced the development in a post on its official Facebook page on Thursday morning.
The visit reflects the two countries' shared interest in strengthening their partnership, particularly in energy cooperation, economic engagement and investment.
During the visit, the Bangladeshi delegation is scheduled to hold discussions with senior Algerian officials, including the minister responsible for hydrocarbons, to explore areas of mutual interest.
The discussions are expected to cover bilateral cooperation, economic and investment partnerships, oil and gas production, and the exchange of technical expertise and experience.
For Bangladesh, the agreement could provide a basis for expanding engagement with Algeria, a major hydrocarbon-producing country in North Africa, as Dhaka seeks to strengthen its energy partnerships and explore potential avenues for securing reliable supplies.
Closer cooperation could also create opportunities for technical collaboration, knowledge sharing and investment in the broader energy sector, subject to the implementation of the agreement and subsequent arrangements between the two governments.
The visit comes as Bangladesh continues to pursue international partnerships to support its energy requirements and economic development.
The latest agreement signals an intention by Dhaka and Algiers to broaden bilateral engagement beyond diplomatic ties and explore practical cooperation in a strategically important sector.
Further details about the MoU, including its specific commitments, implementation framework and potential commercial arrangements, were not immediately available.
