Bangladesh Seeks Stronger Trade, Labour and ASEAN Cooperation in High-Level Talks with Thailand

BANGKOK, July 24 — Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir held bilateral talks with Thailand's Deputy Foreign Minister Vijavat Isarabhakdi in Bangkok on Friday, reaffirming both countries' commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, investment, labour mobility, tourism and regional engagement.

The meeting took place during the Bangladeshi adviser's transit stop in Bangkok following his official visit to Manila, reflecting continued diplomatic engagement between the two friendly nations.

During the discussions, the two sides reviewed the overall state of Bangladesh-Thailand relations and explored opportunities to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in key sectors, including trade and investment, manpower exports, tourism, and people-to-people connectivity.

A major focus of the talks was labour cooperation. The two leaders exchanged views on the potential recruitment of around 10,000 Bangladeshi workers in Thailand once the required administrative and legal formalities are completed, a move that could open new employment opportunities for Bangladeshi professionals and workers.

The meeting also highlighted Bangladesh's growing engagement with Southeast Asia. Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir sought Thailand's continued support for Bangladesh's bid to become an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner, underscoring Dhaka's commitment to strengthening institutional ties with the regional bloc. In response, Deputy Foreign Minister Vijavat Isarabhakdi reaffirmed Thailand's constructive engagement and continued support on the issue.

As part of efforts to further elevate bilateral relations, the Bangladeshi adviser conveyed an invitation from the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to the Prime Minister of Thailand to undertake an official visit to Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time.

The talks reflected the shared interest of both countries in deepening economic cooperation, enhancing labour mobility, and strengthening diplomatic engagement as Bangladesh continues to expand its partnerships with ASEAN member states.
