Chief Whip Moni urges research, innovation to conserve biodiversity.
Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni today stressed the need for greater research and innovation in zoology and biological sciences to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable development.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a general meeting organised by the Zoological Society of Bangladesh at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban in Dhaka.
The Chief Whip said biology is closely linked to food, the environment and human life.
"Food security depends directly on plants and animals, while fish, meat and plant-based foods are essential for human nutrition and livelihoods," he said.
Therefore, he said, protecting plants and animals is vital to safeguarding food supplies and livelihoods.
He also said ensuring access to food, clothing, healthcare and quality education for children is essential to improving people's quality of life and building a better future.
The benefits of democracy reach people through meeting their basic needs and ensuring a safe and dignified life, he added.
Highlighting Bangladesh's rich biodiversity, the Chief Whip said the country's rivers, haors, forests, hills, wetlands and the Sundarbans support a wide variety of animal and plant species.
"Protecting these ecosystems is essential for maintaining environmental balance," he said.
He also highlighted the potential of the younger generation to contribute to research and innovation.
Advanced scientific research and sustainable practices can contribute to biodiversity conservation as well as economic and social development, he said.
Experts at the event discussed wildlife conservation, climate change, advanced technologies and sustainable environmental management.
Professor Dr Md Manzurul Kibria, Vice-Chancellor of BGC Trust University Bangladesh, presented the keynote paper at the event, while Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, chaired it.
Researchers and media personnel also attended the event.
