Government plans directorate to rehabilitate disappearance victims.

The government today decided to form a directorate to rehabilitate victims of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances during the rule of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

“The state wants to formally recognize sacrifices of victims of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and never returned to their families, killed brutally, lost eyesight, became disabled, or spent years in jail in false cases,” Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan said.

Emerging from an inter-ministerial meeting at his office, Azam said the proposed directorate would formed the way a directorate was formed for the July Uprising victims “during the during the 17 years of fascist misrule”.

He said the proposed directorate would act as a permanent deterrent against reemergence of any fascist rule to snatch people's democratic rights and no parents, spouses, or children have to lose loved ones to medieval brutality.

The meeting also discussed prospect of enacting time-befitting laws to ensure full rights and compensation for victims of disappearances, killings, torture, and extrajudicial killings and their families.

Representatives from concerned ministries and offices, including cabinet division, ministries of foreign affairs, public administration, home, finance, law, social welfare, health, youth and sports, labour and employment, disaster management, women and children affairs and secondary and Higher education division joined the meeting.
