Minister urges opposition to play responsible democratic role.
Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan today urged the opposition to play a responsible role, saying this government is democratically elected through the people’s vote.
“I want to tell the opposition: stay calm and come to your senses. Do not go too far. This is a democratically elected government through the people’s vote,” he said while laying foundation as the chief guest for a new building of Aichhara High School at Basail upazila here.
“If you want to remove this government, you will have to wait for five years. Then there will be another election. Contest that election and if you win, you will form the government; otherwise, BNP will be elected again,” the minister added.
Ahmed Azam Khan said the people had rejected the opposition’s for their previous ‘misdeeds; and voted for the BNP in more than 200 seats out of 300 constituencies.
“Those who vote will go to heaven-God forbid, what kind of talk is this? The people understand that a ticket to such a ‘heaven’ means committing sins,” he said.
Addressing the opposition, the minister said, “Remain calm and play a responsible role. Do not resort to arson and vandalism and return to the character of fascism. We do not want to see arson and vandalism in Bangladesh anymore. We do not want to see any election conducted under siege. We do not want to see any forcible rule.”
He said the government belongs to everyone and that it would work for all.
“After five years, we will again go to the people under a caretaker government for a free and fair election. If the people vote for us, we will return. If you get their votes, you will come to power,” he said.
The minister also urged the opposition not to create instability by resorting to violence or surrounding the Secretariat and ministries.
Ahmed Azam praised the opposition for their responsible conduct in Parliament and urged them to maintain the same approach in street outside the Parliament.
“Just as you behave responsibly in Parliament-we have repeatedly thanked you for that-behave responsibly in movements outside Parliament as well. This is what the people of Bangladesh want and expect,” he said.
“I would ask you to stand with our government and remain united. Remain united under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Insha Allah, together we will present you with a prosperous and democratic Bangladesh,” he said.
The programme was chaired by Syed Mojibur Rahman, chairman of the school’s ad hoc managing committee.
Among others, Basail Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Iqbal Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Basail Alamgir Kabir, former joint secretary of Tangail district BNP Abul Kashem Mia, acting president of Basail upazila BNP Mamun Al Jahangir, former president Enamul Karim Atal, President of Basail municipality BNP Aktaruzzaman Tuhin and general secretary Abul Kalam Azad Pintu were present at the event.
