Teesta master plan crucial for northern region’s prosperity.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu today said the Teesta master plan is closely linked to the fortune and prosperity of the northern region.
“Once the master plan is implemented, disasters such as floods and droughts will be brought under control, transforming the northern region into a prosperous area. That is why the present patriotic and democratic government is committed to implementing the project,” he said.
“In this land of six seasons, we have grown up alongside disasters. Various types of disasters strike the country regularly. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief stands beside people who have lost everything in the devastation caused by disasters, serving as a beacon of hope,” he added.
The minister made the remarks as the chief guest at a workshop at the BIAM auditorium in the capital.
The workshop was organized to brief participants on the progress of the project titled “Improvement of Flood Early Warning and Dissemination Systems at the Local Level,” being implemented by the Department of Disaster Management under the “Enhancing Resilience of Vulnerable Communities through Infrastructure Capacity Development and Information (PROBHATI)” project.
The project is being implemented in 19 upazilas across the flood-prone districts of Gaibandha, Kurigram, and Jamalpur in the northwestern region of the country.
It is helping local communities address flood risks by improving seasonal flood forecasting systems at the local level and disseminating early flood warnings.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief M Iqbal Hossain attended the event as a special guest with Department of Disaster Management director general Razwanur Rahman in the chair.
Disaster Management and Relief Secretary (in-charge) ABM Shafiqul Haidar, Chief Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) Belal Hossain, among others, also spoke at the event.
